Description Mr. Paul A. Brinkley
Deputy UnderSecretary of Defense
Director, Task Force for Business and Stability Operations

Join Deputy UnderSecretary Brinkley for a discussion about opportunities for economic revitalization in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Task Force has been revolutionary in the economic stabilization and revitalization field not only as a U.S. Government agency but also within the U.S. Department of Defense. During previous conflicts the civmic il and economic revitalization often took place following the achievement of peace and stability. However, during this last conflict in Iraq, military commanders noticed a correlation between economic hardship and increased violence. From this observation, the Task Force for Business and Stability Operations was created in May 2006 led by Deputy UnderSecretary Paul Brinkley. The goal of the Task Force was to immediately pump money back into the Iraqi economy - by awarding Iraqi businesses U.S. Government and Military contracts, revitalizing the industrial and agricultural sectors, improving communications and technology infrastructure and providing procurement assistance support. Once violence subsided, many investors - both expeditionary and from major multi-national corporations - expressed interest in visiting Iraq to learn more about business and investment opportunities. Since then, the Task Force has hosted over 200 representatives including many senior-level executives. The Task Force continues to work in Iraq and has begun a similar mission in Afghanistan. Task Force highlights include:
· Business engagements with over 30 Multinational Companies

· $4 billion in 5,000 private Iraqi Companies

· Nearly $1 billion in private joint ventures with state owned factories

· $120 million in privately financed 5 star hotels
