Mr. Gay Syria: Film Screening and Talk-Back

June 3, 2018 @ 5:00 am - 8:00 pm

This fascinating and timely documentary observes two gay Syrian refugees who try to rebuild their broken lives. Husein is a barber in Istanbul living a double life that pits his conservative family and upbringing against his gay identity. Mahmoud is the founder of Syria’s LGBTI movement and lives in Berlin. What unites them is a shared dream: to participate in an international beauty contest to escape their trapped lives and overcome their invisibility. Will the dream come true or will the refugee crisis and the harsh reality of being gay in the Muslim world shatter it?

A talk-back will follow the screening of the film. The discussion will explore themes such as the intersection of LGBTQ identity in the Middle East and the effects of the refugee crisis.

Featuring Chris George, Executive Director of IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services)
